Newcastle Fringe Festival is throwing open its doors — and its stages — to artists of every stripe, with registrations for the 2026 festival opening Monday 18 August. Whether you’re a stand-up comedian, cabaret queen, physical theatre innovator, spoken word wizard, or someone who’s been quietly brewing the most gloriously weird idea in your lounge room — this is your chance to join the Fringe.
After a record-breaking 2025 that saw 94 artist groups (612 artists in total) deliver 203 shows to over 14,000 attendees and earn more than $188,000, the festival is levelling up again. In 2026, the Fringe is stretching over three weekends, promising more opportunities for artists and audiences to get their fix.
Chairperson Brooke Twyford says the vibe is “unleashed, uncut, unforgettable” for 2026.
“Fringe is about creative freedom, bold risks, and giving audiences the chance to see something they’ll never forget. This year, we’re turning up the spark and sizzle — with our massive free FEAST opening event in Hamilton – a huge favourite with families, the return of regular highlights such as Choir Day, and three full weekends of Fringe magic. If you’ve got something to say, sing, dance, or shout, we want you here in Newy and now is the time to register.”
Fringe is open-access and unfiltered. No curators, no gatekeepers — if you’ve got a show, you can be part of it. It’s where the weird, the wonderful, and the wildly original come to play — and where stars are born. Artists love Newcastle Fringe because it’s raw and real, unapologetically diverse, accessible and affordable, and part of a 300+ strong global network of creative freedom connecting Newy to the world.
The three distinct hubs introduced in 2025 return in 2026: Hamilton CBD (The Exchange, The Kent, Hamilton Uniting Church), Newcastle Precinct (The Grand Hotel, The Royal Exchange, Bernies), and Beach & ’Burbs (Souths at Merewether, The Dungeon at Adamstown, Flamingos at Lambton).
Artist registrations open Monday 18 August and close 30 September (or earlier if full). Places are capped at 100 artist groups and 200 shows, so early registration is essential. Artists will be notified by 18 November, with the full program on sale 1 February.
